Maryam Katan (1989, Tehran) is an artist working across animation, film, and expanded audiovisual installations. Her practice characteristically displaces and repositions meanings outside their original discourses, exploring alternative cognitive models and decolonizing conventional knowledge systems.

She has worked as the editor of the experimental animation section of CinemaAnimation Magazine, the quarterly publication of DEFC (Documentary & Experimental Film Center of Iran). She is a cofounder and board member of the “Animation; Experiment “ collective, hosted by New Media Society (Tehran) dedicated to the study, discussion, and dissemination of experimental and expanded animation practices beyond cinematic formats, realizing collective study sessions and curatorial projects. She also collaborates with Rabt Nomadic Space as a facilitator engaged in communitybased sonic practices.

Maryam holds an MFA in Animation from Tarbiat Modares University (Iran) and pursued further studies in audiovisual arts at KASK & Conservatorium (Belgium). Her works have been presented in exhibitions, festivals, and collaborative research platforms such as CTM Vorspiel / Zwitschermaschine, nGbK Berlin, Kunstquartier Bethanien, DOK Leipzig, the New Media Caucus (US), The Mosaic Rooms (London), Espace Croisé (Lille/Roubaix), and Podroom Gallery (Belgrade).
